Frequently Asked Questions
How do you waterproof a new canvas tent?
New canvas should be “weathered” before first use — erect the tent and wet the fabric thoroughly with water, allow it to dry completely, and repeat 2–3 times. This process causes the fibers to swell and close any needle holes from manufacturing, completing the natural waterproofing. Apply a canvas waterproofing treatment after initial weathering for enhanced performance.
Is canvas or synthetic better for hot climates?
Canvas breathes better than sealed synthetic, making the interior significantly more comfortable in hot daytime conditions without mechanical cooling. The insulating properties of the thicker canvas fabric also moderate nighttime cold better than thin synthetic materials. For long-term hot-climate use, canvas is the superior choice despite the higher initial cost.
